CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN – Wittenberg Men's Soccer continued to find life on the road in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) to be a challenge as the Tigers dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to host Wabash on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Mud Hollow Stadium.
The Little Giants came out strong in the first half and built what turned out to be an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the first 30 minutes. The scoring started with a goal from Jose Escalante at the 14:15 mark as he scored off a rebound of a bicycle shot attempted by Bryce Kinnaman. The second goal came at the 28:15 mark after a wild scrum in front of the Wittenberg goal resulted the ball trickling into the corner of the Tigers' net.
Wittenberg finally cut into the lead at the 79:46 mark of the game as senior Kees Ciric (Loveland, OH / Loveland) converted a penalty kick. Ciric led the team with three shots on the day, including two on goal. Unfortunately, that would be the final goal of the night for Wittenberg.
Four other Tigers had two shots on the day: Marcus Orton (Knoxville, TN / Webb School of Knoxville), Christopher Meyer (Toledo, OH / St. Francis), Josh Pawlicki (Toledo, OH / Sylvania Southview), and Brendon Raggiunti (Brampton, Ontario / Notre Dame Catholic Secondary).
Sam Nitzberg (Cincinnati, OH / Cincinnati Country Day) and Peter Adams (Columbus, OH / Hilliard Darby) shared time in the goal for Witt with Adams recording a save. Wabash goalie Fernando Ramos tallied three saves.
Overall, Wittenberg had 14 shots, including four on goal. Wabash finished with 11 shots total, including three on goal, and the Little Giants held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
With the loss, Wittenberg falls to 3-7-3 overall and 1-4-2 in the NCAC. Wabash improves to 10-5-2 and 3-2-1 in the NCAC. Wittenberg has a 15-13 lead in the overall series, which dates back to 1988.
Wittenberg will travel to Hiram for another NCAC match and the final game of the 2024 season at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 2.
