Tiger Win Streak Ends at Two with Draw in Third Game
Springfield, OH - Coming into their third game of the season on a two-game win streak, Wittenberg Men's Soccer looked to push it to three as the Tigers hosted the Michigan Dearborn Wolverines at Edwards-Maurer Field on Tuesday night. After the draw, the Tigers move to 2-0-1 on the season and the Wolverines' record is now 1-1-1. Both teams had chances to score, but in the end, neither team was able to find the back of the net and the game came to an end in a 0-0 tie.
In the first half, Wittenberg threatened with three corner kicks and plenty of opportunities came along with them. Junior Collin LaVeck (Carroll, OH / Bloom-Carroll) tallied three tries at the goal in the half, but they were either just wide or saved by Dearborn's keeper. Freshman Ian Sergent (Versailles, KY / Woodford County) had a couple of shots as well, but he also came up empty both times. With all of the opportunities that were piling up for the Tigers, they went into halftime with confidence that their pressure would eventually go their way.
In the second half, the Dearborn defense continued to bend but not break. The Tigers added another five corner kicks, sometimes giving them two attempts on goal, but every time there was either a great save or a near miss. At one point, Brendon Raggiunti (Brampton, Ontario / Notre Dame Catholic Secondary) had a beautiful header from a corner kick that just barely missed, deflecting off the crossbar. Jack Pascoal (Liberty Township, OH / Lakota East) found the rebound and fired it back on target, just to be denied by the keeper. No matter how many attempts both the Tigers and Wolverines had, neither were able to put it between the goal posts, ending in a scoreless draw.
Team Leaders
- LaVeck and Casey Meltzer (Cleveland, OH / St. Ignatius) each fired four shots, with all of Meltzer's being on goal and sophomore Asher Donahue (Muncie, IN / Burris Laboratory School) put both of his shots on frame.
Team Comparison
- The Tigers tallied 11 shots each half for 22 total, came away with eight corner kicks and seven fouls, without a single save.
- The Wolverines did not have a shot, had six corner kicks and two fouls of their own while logging five saves a half for 10 total.
The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, September 5th, as they will face their second away game of the season, taking on Franciscan at 7:00 PM.
