Wittenberg Posts Another Shutout With Stifling Defensive Performance Against Wilmington
The Wittenberg Tigers responded to the first loss of the 2005 season with an outstanding performance in a 2-0 victory over the visiting Wilmington Quakers. Long a powerhouse in the Ohio Athletic Conference, Wilmington was limited to just two shots and two corner kicks in the game by the Tigers, who recorded their eighth shutout of a season just now hitting its mid-point.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers responded to the first loss of the 2005 season with an outstanding performance in a 2-0 victory over the visiting Wilmington Quakers. Long a powerhouse in the Ohio Athletic Conference, Wilmington was limited to just two shots and two corner kicks in the game by the Tigers, who recorded their eighth shutout of a season just now hitting its mid-point.
Wittenberg improved to 9-1 on the season, rebounding impressively from a disappointing 2-1 overtime loss at Westminster on Saturday. Wilmington, the third OAC opponent to fall on the Edwards-Maurer Field turf this season, dropped to 4-5 overall.
After a scoreless first half, the Tigers finally broke through in the 83rd minute on a goal by freshman forward Allison Macke off an assist from senior midfielder Emily Hiscar. Just five minutes later, second before the scoreboard clicked down to zero, senior Lindsay Zigler iced things with an unassisted breakaway goal.
Defensively, the Tigers were outstanding again, gaining their eighth shutout in 10 games and moving them ever closer to last season's school record-tying total of 11. Sophomore goalkeeper Meghan O'Rourke was forced into just one save in the entire game.
