Tennis Teams Fall to Thomas More
CRESTVIEW, KY – Wittenberg's men's and women's tennis teams opened the spring portion of their 2024-25 season on the road on Saturday, Feb. 15, against Thomas More at Five Seasons Family Sports Club.
The Tigers fell 7-0 on the women's side, fielding only a four-player roster, having to forfeit third doubles and fifth and sixth singles. Senior Caroline Sproule (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy Orange) was tough at first singles falling 6-1 in the first set, then battling it out to 7-5 in the second. Sproule and Sidney Purks (Oakwood, OH / Oakwood) also played tough in their doubles match falling, 6-4.
On the men's side, Wittenberg also suffered a 7-0 defeat. Bright spots in the loss were Justin Hardie (Centerville, OH / Centerville) and Jacob Bennett (Pickerington, OH / Pickerington Central) battling it out at second doubles but eventually falling 7-5. Then at No. 5 singles Andrew Garofoli (Springboro, OH / Springboro) lost in a tiebreaker 1-6, 7-5 and 1-0.
"It was a tough start to the season, but we definitely played hard," said John DeVito, Wittenberg tennis coach. "I'm looking forward to seeing how every player can grow throughout this season."
Both teams drop to 0-2 on the season, while both Thomas More teams improve to 2-2.
Next up, the Tigers will host Transylvania on Saturday, March 1.
