Tigers Pick Up Non-Conference Win Over Muskingum
SPRINGFIELD, OH – After a late start due to rain, Wittenberg Baseball pulled out a 5-2 victory over visiting Muskingum in a non-conference contest Thursday night, May 1, at Carlton Davidson Stadium.
Now with three wins in a row and 10 wins in their last 11 games, the Tigers, who improved to 28-9 on the season, are poised to hit the road and take on No. 5 Denison in the final regular-season games on Saturday, May 3. Doubleheader times are noon and 3 p.m. Denison currently leads the North Coast Athletic Conference with a record of 13-1 while Wittenberg and Wooster are tied for second, sporting records of 11-3, and Wabash is right behind with a record of 12-4.
Against the Muskies, who fell to 27-12 on the season, Wittenberg scored two in the third, two in the sixth, and one more in the eighth to put another 'W' in the win column. It was just the second time in the last 11 games that the Tigers had scored less than nine runs in a game.
Currently batting .373, Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, PR / Franklin County) had another good night at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Other players contributing to the big win were Thatcher Dietz (Westerville, OH / Westerville South), Alex Nemunaitis (Perrysburg, OH / Ottawa Hills), and Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, OH / Tallmadge), each going 1-for-4 and scoring a run. Nemunaitis had a double and drove in one. In addition, Quintin Applegate (Delaware, OH / Olentangy Berlin) with a double, an RBI, and a run scored, while Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) was 2-for-3 with a double.
Mikey Eickhoff (Akron, OH / St. Vincent-St. Mary) picked up his first win of the season after throwing five innings in relief. He struck out four Muskies in relief of Chris Dawson (), who was solid in the start, scattering two hits and four walks across four innings while allowing just one Muskingum run.
