WOOSTER, OH. – Wittenberg's women's tennis team opened North Coast Athletic Conference play this weekend with matches against Wooster on Saturday, April 5, and against Oberlin on Sunday, April 6.
The Tigers fell to Wooster, 5-2, and to Oberlin, 6-1, putting their season record at 0-10 overall and 0-2 NCAC. Wooster improves to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC while Oberlin goes to 6-6 and 1-0 in the conference. Both matches were moved indoors due to inclement weather.
In their match against Wooster at the Aspen Racquet Club in Wooster, Ohio, Caroline Sproule (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy Orange) and Sidney Purks (Oakwood, OH / Oakwood) came together to get the 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. However, the Tigers fell 6-3 at No. 2 doubles and had to forfeit No. 3 doubles allowing the Scots to secure the doubles point.
Both Sproule and Purks were also bright spots in singles, each winning their match. Sproule won 6-2 and 6-2 while Purks won 6-4 and 6-1.
Against Oberlin at the Heisman Fieldhouse in Oberlin, Ohio, Sproule and Purks battled it out at first doubles but fell 7-5. The Tigers fell 6-1 at No. 2 doubles and had to forfeit No. 3 doubles allowing Oberlin to secure the doubles point.
On the singles side, Sproule again registered a win at first singles, defeating her opponent in two sets, 6-4 and 6-1.
