Tigers Come a Few Goals Shy of Win Against Otterbein Falling 13-11
SPRINGFIELD, OH. – Coming up on the short end of the stick for the second-straight high-scoring match, Wittenberg's women's lacrosse team fell a few goals shy of a win against Otterbein on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Edwards-Maurer Field, part of the Health, Wellness & Athletics Complex.
Despite the loss, Hannah Peterson (Cedarville, OH / Cedarville) was a shining star on the night, striking for six goals and making the most of her eight total shots - seven of those on goal. She also had an assist, four ground balls, and three draw controls.
After being down 4-3 after the first period, the Cardinals scored two quick goals in the second to go up 6-3 with 12:38 left. But Wittenberg answered with three straight goals to tie things at 6-all at the 6:20 mark. However, a few minutes later, Otterbein managed to score three more and gain the 9-6 edge at the half.
Wittenberg scored three of the first four goals in the third to come within one at 10-9 with 7:58 remaining. But the Cardinals would find the goal once more before the end of the quarter to secure its two-point lead at 11-9.
Neither team could find the net in the first 10 minutes of the final quarter. Peterson then scored goal No. 5 at the 4:48 mark to put the Tigers within one at 11-10. Otterbein answered with a goal of its own to again go up by two. Peterson then landed No. 6 at the 1:30 mark to make it 12-11. However, the Tigers could not get any closer as Otterbein held them on defense and scored its final goal with just one second remaining on the clock.
Wittenberg drops to 0-2 on the season while Otterbein improves to 1-1.
Team Leaders
- Aubrey Stager (Saline, MI / Saline), Essence Wyse (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy), Alyssa Burnside (Galloway, OH / Hilliard Bradley), Elise Jantzen (Fairfield, OH / Fairfield), and Sophia Meek (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy Orange) each scored a goal for the Tigers.
- Stager led the team in ground balls with 12. She also had four draw controls and a caused turnover. Burnside had three draw controls, an assist, and a ground ball.
- Grace Kennedy (Dublin, OH / Coffman) had four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Maren Raymond (Louisville, KY / Ballard) had three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Wyse also had four draw controls and two ground balls.
- Goalkeeper Sidney Sheridan (Columbus, OH / Bishop Hartley) registered 11 saves and had 24 shots faced.
